The mandate of the President of the Republic lasts for five years, and begins with the swearing in of the National Assembly.
The President of the Republic expresses the state unity of the Republic of Serbia and represents the Republic of Serbia in the country and abroad.
The President of the Republic proposes to the National Assembly a candidate for Prime Minister whenever a new Government is elected and is obliged to propose the candidate who can secure the election of the Government.
The President of the Republic may return the voted law to the National Assembly for reconsideration if he considers that the law is not in accordance with the Constitution or that it is in conflict with confirmed international treaties or generally accepted rules of international law, or that the procedure prescribed for the adoption of the law was not followed during the adoption of the law, or that the law does not regulate an area in an appropriate manner.
The President of the Republic may, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, dissolve the National Assembly at the reasoned proposal of the Government and, in doing so, makes a decision calling for elections for deputies.
The President of the Republic promulgates the law by decree, dissolves the National Assembly, appoints and recalls ambassadors of the Republic of Serbia, awards decorations and appoints, promotes and dismisses officers of the Serbian Armed Forces.
By decision, the President of the Republic announces elections for deputies, proposes to the National Assembly candidates for Prime Minister, grants pardons, appoints the General Secretary of the President of the Republic, the Chief of Cabinet of the President of the Republic, advisers to the President of the Republic and other officials in the General Secretariat of the President of the Republic.
The President of the Republic commands the Army and appoints, promotes and dismisses officers of the Serbian Army.
