The official biography of the future president of Serbia, Tomislav Nikolić.

He was born on February 15, 1952 in Kragujevac. His title is Master of Economics. He finished technical school, majoring in construction, in Kragujevac, and graduated from the Faculty of Economics and Engineering Management in Novi Sad. In 1971, he got a job in the construction company "Žegrap" and worked in Majdanpek, Priboj, Prijepolje, Trebinje, Belgrade and other places, until 1978, when he returned to Kragujevac to the company "22. December", where he was the head of the Department for Investments and Maintenance. He was also the technical director of the Municipal Company in Kragujevac.

Political career

Nikolić got involved in the party for the first time in the People's Radical Party, where he was quickly elected vice president. On his initiative, that party and the local committees of the Serbian Chetnik movement led by Vojislav Šešelj were united and a new party was created on February 23, 1991, called the Serbian Radical Party. Vojislav Šešelj was elected president of SRS, and Nikolić was elected vice president. Later, he was elected three times as deputy president of the party, the last time at the Seventh Patriotic Congress of SRS on October 8, 2006. He resigned from all positions in the Serbian Radical Party on September 6, 2008. Already in October 2008, he founded the Serbian Progressive Party, at whose Constituent Assembly on October 21, 2008, he was elected president.

Since 1992, Tomislav Nikolić has been a member of the Serbian Parliament and the only member of parliament who has been elected in every convocation since 1992. Due to his political activities, in 1995 he was sentenced to a two-month prison sentence, which he served in Gjilan.

In March 1998, he was elected as the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Serbia. He resigned on June 14, 1999, when the decision on the arrival of foreign troops in Kosovo was accepted in the Serbian Parliament, but the then President of Serbia, Milan Milutinović, issued a decree according to which all members of the Government remain in their positions, so he was the Deputy Prime Minister until August 14, 1999.

From August 1999, he served as the Vice President of the Federal Government while Momir Bulatović was the Prime Minister.

In May 2007, he was elected President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, but after 5 days he was replaced by the votes of those who elected him.

He was a candidate for president of Serbia four times.

He participated in the presidential elections of 2000 and won third place behind Vojislav Koštunica and Slobodan Milošević.

In the presidential elections of 2003, he received the most votes (47%), but due to insufficient turnout, he did not become president.

In the repeated elections in 2004, he won the most votes in the first round, and in the second round he lost to Boris Tadić in the ratio of 45%:53,7%.

In the last presidential elections in 2008, Nikolić managed to win more votes than the radicals had ever won in some elections (2.197.155 votes or 47,97%) and lost to his opponent by a negligible margin (2.304.467 votes or 50,31%).

Hobby

Nikolić rests in his native village of Bajčetina, picking medicinal herbs and mushrooms. When the time comes, he especially likes, surrounded by friends, to prepare cauldrons for roasting brandy, in accordance with Serbian customs. All those who had the opportunity to hear him say that he sings beautifully.

In his youth, he was involved in athletics.

The family

He is married to Dragica, has sons Radomir and Branislav, grandchildren Lenka, Julija, Dimitrije, Vojin and Janko.

Powers of the President of Serbia

The mandate of the President of the Republic lasts for five years, and begins with the swearing in of the National Assembly.

The President of the Republic expresses the state unity of the Republic of Serbia and represents the Republic of Serbia in the country and abroad.

The President of the Republic proposes to the National Assembly a candidate for Prime Minister whenever a new Government is elected and is obliged to propose the candidate who can secure the election of the Government.

The President of the Republic may return the voted law to the National Assembly for reconsideration if he considers that the law is not in accordance with the Constitution or that it is in conflict with confirmed international treaties or generally accepted rules of international law, or that the procedure prescribed for the adoption of the law was not followed during the adoption of the law, or that the law does not regulate an area in an appropriate manner.

The President of the Republic may, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, dissolve the National Assembly at the reasoned proposal of the Government and, in doing so, makes a decision calling for elections for deputies.

The President of the Republic promulgates the law by decree, dissolves the National Assembly, appoints and recalls ambassadors of the Republic of Serbia, awards decorations and appoints, promotes and dismisses officers of the Serbian Armed Forces.
By decision, the President of the Republic announces elections for deputies, proposes to the National Assembly candidates for Prime Minister, grants pardons, appoints the General Secretary of the President of the Republic, the Chief of Cabinet of the President of the Republic, advisers to the President of the Republic and other officials in the General Secretariat of the President of the Republic.

The President of the Republic commands the Army and appoints, promotes and dismisses officers of the Serbian Army.
