Spring is beginning.. Today is mostly sunny weather with a maximum daily temperature of 14 and a minimum of two degrees Celsius, according to the data of the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute. However, even during the fair, towards the end of winter, the weather was warm, so heating was practically not necessary at times.
One of the founders of the National Environmental Association (NEA) Dejan Lekić says for "Vreme" that 2023 was the hottest year so far, and that the first two months of this year are warmer than 2023, which indicates that something is changing significantly. It indicates that these are no longer changes of 0,1 degrees, but differences exceeding one to 1,5 degrees, which were the predictions until 2050.
"All the plans foreseen by the European Union and the United Nations, which concern the reduced emission of greenhouse gases in order to limit the growth of the global temperature, are called into question because we are now practically already reaching some limits that we tried to avoid in those certain periods from 2030 . until 2050. So, we are already close to those limits," says our interlocutor.
He explains that it is predicted that this year, and every year after that, will be increasingly warm, and this is a problem because it not only affects human health, but also has an impact on many other factors, such as economic and economic factors. Due to the increased temperature, citizens will use air conditioners more, so the consumption of electricity in the summer will be drastically higher.
Lekić adds that the European Environmental Agency (EEA) published an analysis the other day in which it is estimated that Europe is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world, and that should worry us even more.
"I'm not sure that this topic is on our agenda because we have too many other problems to focus on this topic, and we will focus whether we want to or not."
What needs to change?
There are a number of measures that should be implemented, so Lekić says that these are the measures of greening cities in order to cool the environment, ensuring timely actions, informing citizens and familiarizing them with this problem, protecting water sources because it is necessary to preserve the water we have for supplying citizens because it will water should be less.
"We have different measures that concern urban areas, that concern rural areas, but these are entire sets of multidisciplinary measures that require really focused teams that have been dealing with these problems for a long time," says Lekić and concludes: "We For a number of years, we have only been hearing about the fact that large cities in Serbia will get wastewater treatment plants - which is also one of the parts of adaptation to climate change, because by reducing surface water pollution, you are actually providing yourself a better resource in the future".
