This is probably the first text on the "Vremena" website that was written with crucial help artificial intelligence. We are not broadcasting it to make it easier for us as journalists to work, but simply to show how much this "shortcut" has taken off in business, especially in education.
The use of artificial intelligence is becoming more widespread around the world, and ChatGPT, one of the most famous AI tools, is gradually taking its place in the everyday life of Serbian citizens. Although there are no official, comprehensive data on the number of ChatGPT users in Serbia, available sources, research and user statements provide a good basis for assessment.
"By February 2025, ChatGPT has reached a figure of as many as 400 million weekly active users worldwide, according to official data from OpenAI. This growth is due to the ever-widening application in education, business and personal development," the artificial intelligence data states.
How many users are there in Serbia?
Serbia has about 5,8 million Internet users, which is approximately 87 percent of the total population.
"Based on estimates and trends of similar European countries, it is assumed that between 5 and 10 percent of Internet users in Serbia use ChatGPT, which means that there are between 290.000 and 580.000 active users of this tool in the country," are the data collected by ChatGPT.
This figure includes different categories of users - from schoolchildren and students, through developers and freelancers, to citizens who use ChatGPT for translation, solving tasks, writing emails, or everyday advice.
While teachers don't like AI, students are much more sympathetic to it
In the Serbian education system, the use of ChatGPT is still under development. According to the 2024 survey, only 5 percent of IT teachers in primary schools use ChatGPT, while students use it to a much greater extent - primarily for solving homework, composition and research papers.
"With students, the use is even more pronounced. According to data reported by the media, more than 80 percent of students use AI tools like ChatGPT, either to help with learning, or to write term papers and final papers," says ChatGPT.
Professional and personal application
In addition to education, Serbian citizens also use ChatGPT for business purposes - for writing business emails, preparing offers, helping with programming and data analysis. In personal life, it is used for translation, travel planning, home recipes and even emotional advice, claims artificial intelligence.
On forums like Reddit, many users from Serbia point out that ChatGPT saves them time, helps them organize and gives them ideas that were not available to them before - at least that's what artificial intelligence claims. However, everyone agrees that the information it offers should be checked, especially in a professional context.
