Before the start of the seventh round Euroleague, which started yesterday (October 28) with the victory of Crvena Zvezda over the Asvela team, the basketball portal "BasketNews" published a report on the injuries of all clubs in this year's Euroleague, the Belgrade eternal rivals are at the very top according to this parameter.
A long list of injuries could significantly affect the form, but also the placement of certain teams in the next rounds. This week there is a so-called double round, so the price of injuries could be much higher.
Vladimir Koprivica, long-time fitness coach, among other things, for basketball clubs Red Star i Partizan, for "Vreme" notes that the players do not have enough time to recover their bodies for a large number of games.
"The bottom line is that injuries happen to players who are not sufficiently prepared for a large number of games. Money and sponsors are the ones who dictate the number of games, in such a schedule the players have no room for recovery. The body cannot recover from the previous fatigue, and on top of that comes a new game that is only a day or two from the previous one. There is no time for the gym and strength exercises that protect against injuries," Koprivica points out.
First on the list – Red Star
There has been euphoria in the red and white camp from Belgrade for some time now. With the arrival of Saša Obradović, Crvena zvezda looks like a different team. Zvezda tied as many as five victories in the Euroleague, and in between recorded two more on the domestic stage, however, the list of injured players is the longest in the Euroleague.
Koprivica says that physically fit players get a chance even though there are younger and more talented basketball players next to them, so that is one of the important factors that affect injuries.
"Last season, as many as 18 players were injured in one double round. The basketball association is working against itself and its players, the players have become expendable goods. In all of this, only those who are fit and strong play, younger players cannot get a chance because they are physically weaker even though they may be more talented, and that applies to every team in the Euroleague," notes Koprivica.
The team's best individual, Jordan Nwora (calf), but also Hasiel Rivero, who has a fractured metatarsal bone, Aizea Kenan (crossed knee ligament injury) and Joel Bolomboy (ankle) were injured.
Tyson Carter has a serious health problem - a pulmonary embolism, while Devonte Graham is in the final stages of recovery from an ankle injury and is still uncertain to play.
Partizan reached Zvezda by express
Željko Obradović's team has doubled the list of injured players in the last week. It includes Shake Milton (ankle injury), Mario Nakic (anterior cruciate ligament injury), and more recently Karlik Jones (fractured metatarsal bone), Jabari Parker (finger) and Alexei Pokushevsky (head injury).
The last three suffered their injuries in the matches of the Aba League, so all of them, except Karlik who will certainly be absent until January, are questionable for the next two rounds. Parker is the closest to returning to the field, it seems that he is expected to perform tonight in Sofia, where Partizan is visiting Hapoel Tel Aviv.
The professional staff of the eternal rivals is good, explains Koprivica, but it does not have a large share in the time when one player has to play up to 4 games in seven days.
"Our clubs have really good professional staff, but they are powerless in times like this. The medical staff can only "patch" it and try to prevent some worse injuries. The most injuries are among key players because they play 35 minutes each game, and the body cannot withstand that," Koprivica told "Vreme".
Key players are all missing
Real Madrid and Valencia have several players whose performance is under the sign of drinking. Sergio Jules and Andres Feliz did not play in the previous round and their health conditions have not been announced. At Valencia, Braxton Key and Yankuba Sima are injured, while Jose Puerto missed last game due to illness.
Barcelona will be without Juan Nunez, while Nicolas Laprovitola is uncertain. In Anadolu Efes, the season is practically over for Giorgos Papagiannis, while Vincent Poirier and Kai Jones are also out.
In Milan, Lorenzo Brown, Josh Nebo and Zach LeDay are out of the team. Yam Madar and Bruno Caboclo were injured in Hapoel Tel Aviv, while in Bayern Rokas Iokubaitis suffered a serious knee injury.
Finally, Koprivica points out that repairing the number of injuries is an almost impossible mission due to numerous factors.
"This number of injuries is almost impossible to avoid. Possibly some schedule of minutes, but again I note that the main players of the new whole teams, therefore, have to play more than 30 minutes per game. I would add in the end that we also have the phenomenon that players train during the day, and then go out in the evening and do not take care of themselves and their bodies, all this affects injuries and their game", concludes Koprivica.
Fenerbahçe also has serious problems: Arthurs Zagars, Brandon Boston Junior and Jillson Bango are out of the squad. At Panathinaikos, the situation is no better - Mathias Lessor broke his fibula and will be out until mid-November, while Alexander Samodurov, Panagiotis Kalajtsakis and Rishaun Holmes are all uncertain.
Zalgiris will be without Dovid Giedritis and Nigel Williams-Goss for a while, and Olympiakos is in trouble with Keenan Evans, Mustafa Fal and Kostas Papanikolaou.
The only team that currently does not have any injured players is Maccabi from Tel Aviv, which played in the 7th round with a full squad.
