The first round of the new regional season basketball ABA League it was not played, and now the whole competition is in question. The problem arose because of a dispute between league management and referees over their compensation, and the latest negotiations ended without an agreement.
According to the Sport Club, 63 referees who refereed ABA League matches in previous years rejected the offer of the head of the regional competition. The ABA league currently offers 630 euros per game, while the referees ask for 800 euros. The amount of 700 euros per match is mentioned as a possible compromise solution, according to the Sport Club.
Most of them referee Euroleague and Eurocup matches, while they are represented in negotiations by Zagreb lawyer Danijel Papak.
The problem for League leaders is that it is not easy to find new referees. The league has already announced a competition for referees, but has not been able to form a staff that could replace the existing group for the entire season.
Therefore, the next step should be the continuation of negotiations. If an agreement is not reached, the second round, which according to the schedule should be played next weekend, could also be in doubt.
The first round, which was supposed to start on September 25, was officially postponed by the decision of the members of the ABA League. 11 members voted for postponement, while one abstained.
Damage compensation
If the second round is postponed as well, the problem will no longer be only a matter of timing for making up the matches. According to Sport Klub information, clubs such as Dubai, Slovan Bratislava, Vienna and Cluj could seek compensation for the consequences of the suspension of the competition.
For now, it is not known whether the two sides will manage to reconcile their positions. The most important issue remains the amount of compensation per game, but the status issues of referees are also being discussed in the negotiations.
If an agreement was reached around the amount of 700 euros, the season could be continued, while otherwise the ABA league would have to look for another solution for the organization of the trial.
For the regional competition, which is already without the first round, the next negotiations will therefore be crucial for the continuation of the season.
