The traveling festival of the Regional Union of Theaters (RUTA) is a specific festival. RUTA was initiated by the director in 2019 Belgrade Drama Theater Jug Radivojević. It consists of six theaters from six cities of the former Yugoslavia and was founded with the aim of exchanging plays and working on co-productions. RUTE is hosted by theaters from those cities throughout the year, one every two months.
RUTA is currently at the Belgrade Drama Theatre, and for the seventh time.
The life of provincial playboys
It opened on December 1 with the comedy "The Life of Provincial Playboys after the Second World War", based on the text by Dušan Jovanović, directed by Ivan Penović, and until December 6, the big stage will feature plays from other members of the Union - from Sarajevo, Skopje, Zagreb, Ljubljana and Tivat.
The novelty of the RUTA festival is a special program of monodramas, MonoRUTA, as well as masterclasses of prominent theater artists from the region.
The play "The Life of Provincial Playboys after the Second World War" was created in cooperation with the Municipal Theater from Ljubljana, the City Theater from Budva, the Skopje Drama Theater and BDP.
The actors in the play speak their own languages - Serbian, Macedonian and Slovenian. They pointed out that it was not an obstacle for them, that they understand each other well and that it means a lot to them that they got along well during the rehearsals.
The play "The Life of Provincial Playboys" or "We Want What's Ours" brings the spirit of the sexual revolution and the spring of '68, as well as the reaction of the then youngest artistic generation to social conditions in Yugoslavia.
On the program until the end
The next play is the Sarajevo war theater SARTR "Podroom" by Armin Behram, directed by Ajla Bešić. The play explores love, fear and the fragility of modern relationships. Intertwined episodes of their intimacy are refracted through the nightlife, the club atmosphere and the small apartment, which are temporary refuges for the characters.
The Skopje Drama Theater chose "Shoots on Broadway" as a guest on December 3, based on the script by Woody Allen and Douglas McGrath, directed and adapted by Nenad Vitanov. The play, inspired by the film of the same name, questions the morality of a young artist, ready to reject any compromise and conventional boundaries for the sake of artistic creation.
On December 4, the Igralka collective and the Ulysses Theater (Zagreb) will perform the play "Mothers" directed by Rajna Rac, on the topic of the decision on motherhood from the point of view of the first generation of women who truly have freedom of choice. The authors, relying on their own experience and interviews with women of different generations, open up questions of identity, fear, pressures and heritage.
On December 5, the play "Three million minutes" comes from the City Theater of Ljubljana, in which four friends, business partners and directors of a successful company hide a common secret: tax evasion through double bookkeeping. The author is Jose Cabeza, and the director is Barbara Hieng Samobor.
On the last evening of the festival, on December 6th, "Contra Mundum" will be a guest, produced by the Tivat Cultural Center, directed by Veljko Mićunović. It is a stage dialogue with the idea of art, eccentricity and personal mythology about Dali.
At the same time, there are four monodramas on the RUTE program on the BDP's small stage: "Milunka" (Serbia) by Vesna Stanković, "Carmen" (Northern Macedonia) by Biljana Dragićević Projkovska, "Virdžina" (Montenegro) by Marta Ćeranić and "Smrtno servija" (Slovenia) by Boris Ostan.
Three masterclasses are planned: theater direction by Boris Liješević, theater production by Duško Ljutina, and acting masterclass by Ozren Grabarić.
