Since the mayor of Subotica announced at the end of April that the work on the National Theater building was completed, it has not yet been opened, nor has the construction material been cleared.
Since 2007, when the reconstruction began, it was the seventh announcement of the opening of the Subotica Theater.
At the time of this latest announcement, it was also learned that the price for the adaptation, reconstruction and extension of the National Theater building has increased. When all changes are added up, from the beginning of the works until now, the price of this work has increased from the originally contracted 1,154 billion to 1,708 billion dinars, that is, by 554 million dinars including VAT.
The reconstruction of the Subotica Theater had two phases: in 2014, it was decided to reduce the capacity of the theater by one floor, so it was reconstructed under these new conditions. And then a new reconstruction began, according to the original conditions.
The City Committee of the National Movement of Serbia in Subotica (NPS) is now asking "where has the citizens' money gone".
The National Theater in Subotica was built in 1854, according to the project of the architect Janos Škulteti, and is one of the main symbols of that city.
The building was declared an immovable cultural asset as a cultural monument of great importance. However, most of it was demolished in the summer of 2007, and its six columns were preserved in their original form. The decision to demolish the theater was made by the parties that were in power in Subotica at the time - the Union of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) and the Democratic Party.
