The initiative, which would be expected from the city authorities, was undertaken by the National Museum Zrenjanina.
The National Museum of this city invited fellow citizens who own items related to the "Proleter" Carpet Industry, the "Begej" Hat Factory, "Sloga" or the "Udarnik" Socks Factory, or who want to share stories about the aforementioned factories, in order to remind the public that during Yugoslavia, Zrenjanin was the center of the textile industry.
The initiator of this action is the curator of the National Museum, Aleksandra Kozarev.
History
The history of the textile industry in Zrenjanin is more than a century old, the portal zrenjaninski.com reminds.
They write that the famous Carpet Factory "Proleter" was founded in 1894, it had ups and downs from which it recovered, but from the last one, privatization - not at all.
Even hats are no longer made in the Zrenjanin factories of the Begej factory, and it met an inglorious end during the transition.
The factory, which produced the famous berets and other caps, found itself in financial problems at the end of the nineties of the last century, and the agony continued with the opening of bankruptcy proceedings in 2002 before the Commercial Court in Zrenjanin, which was completed only twelve years later.
A Chinese mall instead of a factory
There is now a Chinese shopping center on the site of the former knitwear factory "Zita", also in the former "Sloga", and a similar fate befell "Midere". Not even in "Slavica" have quilts been sewn for a long time.
The sock factory "Udarnik" also disappeared from the economic scene. Zrenjaninski.com writes that the factory survived until the beginning of the 2000s, when it was taken over by the state, as the Privatization Agency did a new capital assessment, disempowered the small shareholders, the former majority managers, and registered the state as the owner with a 53 percent stake. Since then, the assets of the company, which employed about 400 workers, began to be crowned.
In the meantime, the Italian company "Pompea" came to the city on Begej, which built a large factory for the production of socks in the Bagljaš industrial zone. Paradoxically, while the state-owned "Udarnik" was collapsing and workers were losing their jobs, the state was simultaneously awarding financial incentives for employment to an Italian investor.
