The conceptual solution for the monument to King Milan Obrenović, which is one of the most significant, was presented to the people of Leskov and the public. Leskovac legate kao Capitals of Culture of Serbia for 2026.
The author of the monument is the professor of the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, prof. Dr. Zoran Ivanovic.
The City of Leskovac states that the monument was conceived as a monumental equestrian composition that symbolizes the triumphal entry of King Milan I Obrenović into the liberated cities after the liberation wars, representing victory, statehood and the beginning of a new period of development in the south of Serbia.
With the pedestal, the monument will be almost 8 meters high.
It is expected that the monument will be ceremonially unveiled on December 24, 2026.
"Južne vesti" reminds that after the first tender for the selection of the contractor failed because the offer was higher than the estimated value, this time the public procurement was completed and the work was won by the art workshop "Kuzman" from Smederevo, which will be in charge of making, transporting and installing the monument.
Minister Selaković
Last October, the Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković announced that Leskovac, as the first city in Serbia, will receive a monument to King Milan Obrenović, which, he said, will show gratitude to the generations who are responsible for the liberation and progress of this region.
Leskovac residents, although they have nothing against the king of Milan or a new monument in their city, at that time they thought on social networks that it would be more appropriate to get a monument of someone who has something to do with their history, but this argument and proposals were not taken into account.
Investments for the Capital of Culture
Then in October, presenting the project "Leskovac - Capital of Culture 2026", Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković pointed out that about 565 million dinars will be invested in the culture of Leskovac in the next 16 months, of which 400 million dinars will come from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and the city of Leskovac, and an additional 165 million dinars will come from loans from the Development Bank of the Council of Europe.
Part of that money, 54.996.000 dinars including VAT, has been earmarked for a monument to King Milan.
Textile Industry Museum
The Museum of the Textile Industry will be revitalized with European Union money - Leskovac has been approved for a cross-border cooperation project worth slightly more than 624 thousand euros, writes "Južne vesti". In addition to the renovation of the Museum, the project includes the development of modern digital content, a virtual presentation of the history of the Leskovac textile industry, new promotional activities and cultural programs.

It will be realized in the next two years in partnership with the Municipality of Kriva Palanka, the National Museum of Leskovac and the Center for the Development of the Jablanica and Pčinj Districts.
The textile museum in Strojkovac, 11 kilometers from Leskovac, is the only museum of its kind in Serbia. It is located in a mill that was built in the second half of the 19th century. In 1884, enterprising people from Leskov opened the first cord factory, which is considered the beginning of the textile industry in Serbia.
