The 100 largest companies by revenue generated approximately 28,6 percent of the total revenue of the whole economy, according to the latest data from 2024. This confirms that the Serbian market is still heavily dependent on several dominant companies from energy, trade, mining, telecommunications and the so-called large industry, writes Biznis.rs
The highest revenues in the country are still achieved by companies that operate in sectors with a huge turnover of goods or energy. Electric power industry of Serbia, NIS, Srbijagas, mining companies in Bor, as well as the largest retail chains and telecom operators dominate in terms of absolute turnover.
The rich acquired 78 percent of the economy's income
At the end of 2024, there were a total of 2.923 companies with over one billion dinars in annual revenue (about 8,5 million euros). These dinar "billionaires" together achieved 15.657,8 billion dinars in income, that is, they had a 77,9 percent share in the total results of all domestic companies.
These companies employed 813.047 workers, that is, 61,3 percent of all employees in companies.
Why is energy strong?
According to data from the credit rating company CompanyWall, the most represented activities are trade, computer programming, and construction activities, while traditionally the largest systems are represented by only a few companies, but of exceptional size, such as EPS, NIS, and Zijin.
The data clearly show that in Serbia it is easiest to achieve extremely high income in trade, computing, construction and energy and mining (large systems), but that by far the highest return on income is achieved in mining. In other words, if a company in Serbia generates tens or hundreds of billions of dinars in revenue, the most profitable business model is one that combines high turnover with control over a rare resource, infrastructure or market position.
That's why mining companies like Serbia Zijin Mining are far more profitable than trading chains, even though their revenues are often lower than the largest energy and trading systems.
