Bears slaughtered three sheep around midnight on Tuesday, while two lambs disappeared from a barn in Rožnja, near Pečka in western Serbia.
Zlatko Gligorić, the owner of the property where the attack took place, was in the cabin that night. He immediately contacted the police, the hunting association and the competent veterinary service.
According to veterinarian Igor Rabat, it is certain that the attack was committed by two bears, since comparatively huge paw prints can be seen.
"It is known that there are bears in these mountainous regions, but it is not remembered that they have attacked livestock so far." To the extent that this case can represent a certain warning, because once a bear becomes a carnivore, it remains so forever, which can pose a great danger," warned Rabat, and reports Kolubara.
Attacks are becoming more frequent in the region.
There have been several similar incidents in the region in recent years. In November last year, in the town of Trepča in the vicinity of Nikšić, there was a bear attack on livestock.
Local resident Živko Kosović then suffered great damage, because the bear killed three and injured one cow on his farm. The estimated damage is around 8.000 euros, which was a big blow for Kosović, who is engaged in cattle breeding and agriculture.
Rade Fundupa, a resident of the village of Prošće near Pljevlja, suffered the greatest damage. Four bears invaded his property and killed ten sheep. Fundupa narrowly avoided being attacked himself as he tried to defend the herd.
