Commemoration of Memorial Day victims of the Ustasha genocide against Serbs, Jews and Roma in the Independent State of Croatia from 1941 to 1945 began with the laying of wreaths on the "Topole" burial ground in the Donja Gradina Memorial Area, which honored the victims of the Jasenovac concentration camp, reports N1.
On behalf of the institutions of the Republika Srpska, Serbia and Montenegro, wreaths were laid by the President of the RS Milorad Dodik, the Prime Minister of Serbia Miloš Vučević and the President of the Parliament of Montenegro Andrija Mandić.
Wreaths were also laid by the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željka Cvijanović, the President of the National Assembly of the RS Nenad Stevandić and the Prime Minister of the RS Radovan Višković.
Flowers and wreaths were also laid by the president of the Banja Luka Association of World War II camp inmates, Dobrila Kukolj, the ambassador of Israel to BiH based in Tirana, Galit Peleg, the president of the Roma Association of Serbia, Dragoljub Arsović, as well as other delegations.
Death camp
Remembrance Day is celebrated on the occasion of the liberation of the Ustasha camp Jasenovac, one of the largest death camps in Europe during World War II.
The Jasenovac camp was formed in August 1941 and was active until April 1945, when the inmates organized a breakout in an attempt to save themselves. Hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, Roma and anti-fascists of other nationalities passed through it and died in it.
By 2018, 83.811 names and surnames of persons who died in the camp had been collected in the Jasenovac Memorial Area.
