As he announced MUP, the police will carry out the international action "Focus on the Road" in the period from October 6 to 12 this year and will more strictly check and sanction drivers who use the phone while driving, i.e. pedestrians who cross the street and use the phone or have headphones.
The action will be carried out simultaneously in 34 European member states of the ROADPOL organization (European traffic police network).
Using a mobile phone while driving increases the risk of a traffic accident by four to twenty times, which makes this offense one of the biggest road safety problems at the moment, the police said.
According to the data of the Traffic Safety Agency, about five percent of pedestrians illegally use mobile phones or headphones when crossing the road, while the percentage of drivers who illegally use mobile phones while driving ranges from four to eight percent, depending on the type of vehicle.
