Over the past decades in Belgrade it became noticeable that certain parts of the city cool down more slowly at night than before.
Residents often feel this intuitively: the air remains warm even after sunset, and the temperature stress lasts until the late evening hours. This phenomenon is a manifestation of the urban effect heat island.
Architect Milena Ristić investigated the impact of new construction on the microclimatic conditions in two blocks in New Belgrade, as well as in the Zemun Polje settlement.
Research on the impact of construction on the microclimate was conducted in two blocks in New Belgrade (61 and 11c), as well as in the Zemun Polje settlement. In all three blocks, new structures have been built in recent decades that have reduced the available green areas, writes Milena Ristić for the Klima 101 portal.
The research showed, among other things, that the increase in the share of asphalt and concrete surfaces led to an increase in surface temperatures of up to about 5 °C compared to the scenario from 1985. Also, during the summer evenings, between the shaded and open asphalted parts of the blocks, the difference in heat stress reaches 6 °C.

In addition to elevated temperatures, such areas are also characterized by increased air pollution, smog and reduced air humidity. Despite the development of modern planning approaches, the key problem - the continuous reduction of greenery and natural land - remains pronounced. Therefore, understanding the impact of the change in urban morphology on the microclimate has become crucial for the development of a climate-resistant Belgrade.
