- The students of the "Jovan Jovanović Zmaj" High School in Novi Sad returned to their home school on Monday, after more than a year of teaching in three other schools, and after the completion of the work on the dome.
- The mayor of Novi Sad, Žarko Mićin, claims that the court's expert opinion established that the dome and the works carried out do not threaten the safety of the building.
- The students announced that the information from their October 10 plenum was published without their approval, which, according to them, means that they were eavesdropped and that minors were also recorded.
- The parents are announcing legal action against the principal and the mayor for, as they claim, the abuse of minors for political purposes.
What happened
The students' return to "Jovina Gymnasium" began with the performance of the school choir and the performance of the school anthem, and the parent of one of the students, Milan Kovačević, read the student's statement immediately before their entry. The students state that the information from their plenum held on October 10 was published in certain media without their approval and that this "proves that they were eavesdropped." They say that minors were also filmed, they condemn illegal filming, they point out that they will not participate in any political campaign and say: "Jovina is ours! You will answer!".
Mayor Mićin, director Radivoje P. Stojković and president of the City Assembly Dina Vučinić visited the school on Saturday and announced that classes will be held in the main building from Monday. On that occasion, the students of the first and second grade of the high school, as well as the seventh and eighth grade of the elementary school, were invited to visit it, because until then they had not had the opportunity to see it.
Students and professors were displaced from the building at the beginning of the last school year due to the work on the dome and the ban on using the school building after the inspection findings, so they attended classes in three other schools. The City Administration for Inspection Affairs lifted the ban on the use of the ceremonial hall after the parts of the dome that deviated from the building permit were removed, and the dome was returned to its designed position with hydraulic presses. Mićin said that the changes to the facility will be monitored and measured for six months as a preventive measure, and the return was made possible before the previously announced deadline, October 15.
In a statement, the parents assessed that Mićin and Stojković abused minors for the promotion of SNS before the elections on October 25, without the parents' written consent, and asked why the works lasted for weeks, and the displacement took over a year. In recent months, the school has been in a dispute over suspensions and dismissals of professors.
Why is this important?
For about a thousand students and their families, it is the end of a long period in which they attended classes in three different schools.
The safety of the dome is an important issue for the citizens, because it depends on whether the building is safe for daily use, and this is now evidenced by the forensic examination and the next six months of monitoring.
Allegations of filming minors raise the issue of protecting the privacy of children at school, and the dispute over political abuse is the question of whether decisions about the school are used in the election campaign.
