There are more and more people suffering from different types of flu. An epidemic of whooping cough has been reported, and various other respiratory diseases and viruses are also present. So the question arises, should we wear protective masks again?
Epidemiologist Zoran Radovanović told "Vreme" that masks are effective, that the type of mask depends on how effective they are, and added that N95 and N99 masks additionally protect against air pollution, but also that ordinary, surgical masks also protect against the transmission of various diseases.
"It depends on the quality of the mask, how well it adheres to the face, how long it has been used, even if it has been used several times and if it is a little loose, it still protects, of course much less," says the epidemiologist.
He goes on to say that wearing masks is a cultural issue. "Here, if you wear a mask, many compatriots will look at you in amazement, while in China or Japan they look at you in amazement if you don't wear a mask in a crowd."
The risk, he says, is the same everywhere, but the attitude towards such a measure differs, and that in our country it is left to the individual to decide whether and how to protect himself. He explains that the more cautious will avoid entering the trolleybus, going to a game or the theater, and if they find themselves in a situation where there are many people, they will wear a mask.
How to protect yourself?
The general state of health, the quality of sleep and nutrition, the amount of stress directly affect a person's immunity.
Radovanović says that it is essential to be careful and avoid unnecessary close contacts, that someone does not cough in your face, and that masks are especially important for sensitive people who have transplanted organs, autoimmune diseases or take drugs that reduce the body's resistance.
"Cautious people received the flu vaccine", our interlocutor points out and adds that around 400.000 doses were ordered this year and that anyone who wants can still go and get vaccinated.
No covid vaccine was procured this fall because the response was very poor last year.
"There is no protection against covid, although it would benefit those who are at increased risk."
Warning from the World Health Organization
"Too many people need serious medical help due to flu, covid, and we can prevent it," commented the director of the World Health Organization, Maria Van Kerkhove, on the preparedness of countries for epidemics and pandemics.
She warned of "unbelievably low" vaccination rates against influenza and COVID-19 in many countries this season as the world tries to overcome the pandemic and all the restrictions.
Possible extension of the road
Belgrade media write that due to the large number of people suffering from flu, flu-like illnesses, corona virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and whooping cough, the winter vacation may be extended.
They state that students in Vojvodina return to school on the 15th, and in the rest of Serbia on the 22nd. Epidemiologists warn that the biggest impact of flu is expected in the second half of January and in February.
They report that the Ministry of Education said that if they receive a recommendation from the Ministry of Health, they will act in accordance with it.
