In Bačka Palanka today, after the meeting of the Emergency Situations Staff, a state of emergency was declared due to the fire that broke out at the landfill in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, FoNet was told in that municipality.
This is the third time in the last few weeks that a fire has broken out at that landfill, and the previous time firefighters spent more than a week putting it out.
The inhabitants of Bačka Palanka are in fear
"It's like I'm in the twilight zone, it's scary. Who knows what's in the air. Burning waste, there must be pollution," a resident of Bačka Palanka told "Vreme". He adds that the city is surrounded by smoke, that it is difficult to breathe.
Due to the fire, the informal group of citizens "Bačka Palanka with students" also spoke out, which points out that the last fire at the landfill was the result of bad city management.
"Fires in landfills are not just an ugly picture - they represent a serious risk to human health and the environment. When the same problem is repeated over and over again, it is no longer an accident, but a picture of incompetent management. Citizens have the right to answers, but even more to a responsible government that prevents problems instead of putting them out again when it's too late," they said on the Instagram social network.
